For the first time this season, Selma will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will be playing in front of their home fans against the Hanford West Huskies at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.
Selma's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 13-0 margin over Central Valley Christian. That looming 13-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Bears yet this season.
Gabriela Pena was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-2.
In other batting news, Audrina Quintana was incredible, going 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Lillyen Moreno was another key player, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.
Selma was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .433. They are 3-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Hanford West hadn't done well against Reedley recently (they were 0-3 in their previous three matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Huskies blew past the Pirates 9-3. The result was nothing new for the Huskies, who have now won four games by six runs or more so far this season.
Rylan Montoya spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits. Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season.
At the plate, Hanford West got a massive performance out of Karmen Vazquez, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Kennidy Perryman, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3.
Hanford West's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-2. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. As for Selma, they now have a winning record of 6-5-1.
Selma took their win against Hanford West in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 10-0 score. Will the Bears repeat their success, or do the Huskies have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
