After flying high against the Greeley Central Wildcats last Friday, the Longmont Trojans came back down to earth. Longmont was just a bucket shy of victory on Wednesday and fell 46-45 to Holy Family. Longmont was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Holy Family apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2023.
When it comes to explaining why Longmont lost, one person who can't be blamed is Levi Scheck. Despite the final result, he scored 14 points along with five rebounds. Another player making a difference was Levi Varga, who scored two points.
It was another big night for Joseph Portillo jr, who scored 17 points along with three steals for Holy Family. Portillo jr has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayden Watts, who scored seven points along with nine rebounds and four steals.
Longmont's loss was their third straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 8-5. As for Holy Family, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 9-4.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Longmont will face off against Greeley West at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Greeley West focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 30 on Wednesday. As for Holy Family, they will head out on the road to square off against Mead at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Colorado (Mead is ranked 33rd, while Holy Family is ranked 40th).
