Big things were expected Friday night from high school football's top-rated junior quarterback Quinn Ewers
and Texas powerhouse Southlake Carroll
, ranked No. 11 nationally by MaxPreps. The Dragons delivered – at least offensively – in a big way, piling up points and yards at will in a 72-57 win over Rockwall-Heath (Rockwall)
Ewers connected on 21 of 27 pass attempts for 387 yards and five touchdown passes as Carroll (1-0) won a wild opener that included 1,315 yards of total offense.
The Texas Longhorns pledge got plenty of help from sophomore running back Owen Allen
, who piled up 218 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries.
Rockwall-Heath (1-1) has been involved in two games already this season that ended with basketball-esque final scores. Last week, the Hawks beat Lewisville 72-52. This week, quarterback Josh Hoover
threw for 391 yards and three touchdowns while running backs Zach Evans
and Preston Landis
both topped the 100-yard mark on the ground.
One of the state's storied programs since the late 1980s, Southlake Carroll is in the hunt for its first state title since 2011. The Dragons won eight between 1988 and 2011 and were named national champions by at least one media outlet in three straight seasons from 2004 to 2006.
Ewers committed to Texas in August. 247Sports has him pegged as the No. 1 quarterback in the Class of 2022 and the No. 2 prospect overall. He was the MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year in 2019, throwing for 4,003 yards and 45 touchdowns against just three interceptions while completing over 72 percent of his passes. He added another 568 yards on the ground and nine more scores.
Chase Daniel, Kenny Hill, Greg McElroy and current Southlake Carroll head coach Riley Dodge are all big time quarterbacks who have come through the program over the past 20 years.
