Baseball Recap: Southwestern Has No Trouble Against Shawe Memorial

Southwestern had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 13-run drubbing they dealt Shawe Memorial on Monday. The Rebels blew past the Hilltoppers 13-0. Considering the Rebels have won nine contests by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Andrew Varble and Jeter Chatham did most of the damage at the plate: Varble went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one double, while Chatham went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Southwestern is undefeated when Chatham posts two or more runs, but 5-6 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Austin Jenkins, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two doubles.

Southwestern always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .552. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Shawe Memorial only posted an OBP of .067.

Southwestern has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Shawe Memorial, their loss was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-15.

Coming up, Southwestern will welcome Providence at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Shawe Memorial, they will head out to challenge New Washington at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Mustangs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.77 runs per game on average), something the Hilltoppers will no doubt try to take advantage of.
