Emma Hirshorn made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double. That double marked the first that she has hit this season.
In other batting news, Briannica Titus was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. Samantha Nielsen also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last match, Shorecrest made sure to put some runs up on the board against Lynnwood on Monday. The Scots blew past the Royals 19-3. Considering the Scots' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Like Glacier Peak, Shorecrest also got a great game from a two-way player: Claire Maxwell. On the mound, she tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. Maxwell was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Chloe Gurnee, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with five runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Lilia Pomaika'I Pua Titiali'I-McKinn, who went 3-for-4 with four runs and one double.
Shorecrest kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Glacier Peak's record is now 13-5. As for Shorecrest, their win ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-12.
Shorecrest's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Wednesday. Glacier Peak has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.1 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Shorecrest, though, as they've been averaging only 3.9 strikeouts. Will Glacier Peak keep running through batters, or will the Scots buck the trend?
Everything went Glacier Peak's way against Shorecrest when the teams last played back in May of 2016, as Glacier Peak made off with a 13-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Grizzlies since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
