Peyton Looper and Ana Cuevas did most of the damage at the plate: Looper went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double, while Cuevas scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits Looper has posted since back in March. Karina Villafuerte was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Estancia hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Sandia Prep came up short against Ruidoso on Saturday, falling 21-4. The Sundevils have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Mary Otero made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1. That stolen base was her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Madeline Draszkiewicz, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.
Sandia Prep's defeat dropped their record down to 3-13. As for Estancia, their win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-2.
Sandia Prep's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Estancia has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.1 hits per game. It's a different story for Sandia Prep, though, as they've been averaging 13.8 hits. Given Estancia's sizable advantage in that area, the Sundevils will need to find a way to close that gap.
Estancia took their victory against Sandia Prep when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 16-0 score. Will the Bears repeat their success, or do the Sundevils have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
