Softball Recap: Marquette Has No Trouble Against Midland

Marquette came out on top against Midland on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive ten-run fourth inning. The Crusaders blew past the Timberwolves 14-1. Considering the Crusaders have won 16 contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Savanah Erickson tossed a big game, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and not a single walk). Those eight strikeouts gave her a new career-high.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Makayla Backos, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Hunter Hopkins was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

Marquette always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .568. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matches.

Marquette pushed their record up to 22-6 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Midland, they are on a 17-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-18.

Looking ahead, Marquette will square off against Bloomington Central Catholic at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Midland does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
