The Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs will square off against the Marion Wildcats at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Mahomet-Seymour is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat Richwoods 63-14. Given the Bulldogs' advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois football rankings (they are ranked 88th, while the Knights are ranked 414th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.
Mahomet-Seymour's defense made their presence known, laying out the QB five times. Richwoods' QB won't forget Pierce Douglas anytime soon given he sacked him twice.
Meanwhile, Marion entered their tilt with Mattoon on Friday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They took their matchup with ease, bagging a 49-21 win over the Greenwave. With the Wildcats ahead 42-7 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
Mahomet-Seymour better keep an eye on Callahan Roper. He was instrumental in Marion's win, throwing for 435 yards and six touchdowns while completing 85.3% of his passes. With that strong performance, Roper is now averaging an impressive 311.2 passing yards per game. Blake Winters also helped with two TDs in total.
Marion didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Mattoon to a completion percentage of just 44.1%. The team can thank Andre Jones for the heroic effort on defense: he. Marion wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 83.3%.
Mahomet-Seymour's record now sits at 6-3. As for Marion, their record is now an identical 6-3.
Saturday's game might be decided in the trenches. Mahomet-Seymour has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 239.4 rushing yards per game. It's a different story for Marion, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 97 rushing yards. How will they fare against such a dominant running game?
Mahomet-Seymour might still be hurting after the 34-13 loss they got from Marion in their previous meeting back in August of 2019. That matchup was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Bulldogs were down 20-0.
