Payson is 0-10 against Holbrook since January of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Payson Longhorns will be staying on the road to face off against the Holbrook Roadrunners at 6:00 p.m. on January 16th. Hopefully Payson focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 32 on Friday.
Last Friday, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Payson beat Snowflake 41-37. The win was all the more spectacular given Payson's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 64th, while Snowflake is ranked 19th).
Payson can attribute much of their success to Alondra Ramirez, who scored 13 points along with two steals, and Hannah Sarnowski, who scored ten points along with seven assists.
Meanwhile, Holbrook's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their third straight loss. They had to suffer through a rough 59-28 loss at the hands of Monument Valley. Holbrook was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 46-19.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Raelle Yazzie, who scored nine points.
Payson's victory bumped their record up to 13-5. As for Holbrook, their defeat was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 5-14.
Payson might still be hurting after the 56-35 defeat they got from Holbrook in their previous matchup back in February of 2023. Can Payson avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
