Claire Mitchell was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. Hailey Uhrinek also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Hempfield Area was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .480. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .391 or higher in nine consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Canon-McMillan beat Mt. Lebanon 8-3 on Thursday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Big Macs.
Brooke Bumer tossed a big game, striking out 11 batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Hailey Swope, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Those three runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Skylah Steban, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Hempfield Area pushed their record up to 14-0 with the victory, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.1 runs on average over those games. As for Canon-McMillan, their record now sits at 8-6.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Tuesday. Hempfield Area hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like Canon-McMillan struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.8 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Hempfield Area took their victory against Canon-McMillan in their previous meeting back in March by a conclusive 10-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
