Lafayette has gone 9-1 against Branford recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Hornets will square off against the Buccaneers at 7:00 p.m. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Lafayette sitting on 13 straight victories and Branford on ten.
Lafayette is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They never let Hilliard get on the board and left with a 10-0 win. Considering the Hornets have won nine contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
The result came thanks to Ethan Tuten's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up nine Ks. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Brayden Richardson was incredible, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one run. That triple marked the first that he hit this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Hyatt Richardson, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.
Brayden wasn't the only one making solid contact: Lafayette kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hilliard only managed two hits.
Meanwhile, Branford hadn't done well against Union County recently (they were 0-3 in their previous three matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Buccaneers narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Fightin' Tigers 4-2.
Patrick Williams made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. Williams was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
Williams wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Troy Roberts, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Lafayette's win bumped their record up to 19-2. As for Branford, their victory bumped their record up to 21-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Lafayette has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Branford struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Lafayette came out on top in a nail-biter against Branford in their previous meeting back in March, sneaking past 2-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hornets since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
