Two dominant in Pablo Bermudez and Bex Seaman are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Cheylin Cougars will head out on the road to square off against the Hi-Plains Patriots at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Cheylin focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 on Tuesday.
Cheylin fought the good fight in their overtime match against Southwest but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Roughriders 53-48. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Cheylin came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 102nd in Kansas, while Southwest is ranked 236th in Nebraska).
Cheylin's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Bermudez, who scored 17 points along with seven steals, and Logan McCarty who scored 15 points along with two steals. McCarty hasn't dropped below two steals for seven straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Victor Hernandez, who scored eight points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Hi-Plains suffered their biggest defeat yet this season on Tuesday. They were beaten by Stratton 74-38.
Cheylin's record is now 7-3. As for Hi-Plains, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost six of their last seven contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-8 record this season.
Cheylin was able to grind out a solid victory over Hi-Plains when the teams last played back in January of 2023, winning 47-34. The rematch might be a little tougher for Cheylin since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
