The Giles Spartans will head out to face off against the Galax Maroon Tide at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Giles is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.7 runs per game this season.
Giles is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 17 runs last Thursday, they were much more limited against Auburn on Tuesday. They came up short against the Eagles, falling 17-2. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since April 16, 2024, but that streak is no more.
Summer Ceritano made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-2 with one home run and two RBI.
Meanwhile, after low-scoring totals in their previous three game, Galax brought some dynamite into their most recent contest. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Carroll County 10-8. Considering the Maroon Tide's hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Molly Plant spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and four unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up six Ks.
On the hitting side, Maddson Bobbitt was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and two doubles. The team also got some help courtesy of Elizabeth Sizemore, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Giles' defeat dropped their record down to 7-4. As for Galax, the victory snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 4-7 record.
Galax's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Giles has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.1 hits per game. It's a different story for Galax, though, as they've been averaging 9.3 hits. Given Giles' sizable advantage in that area, the Maroon Tide will need to find a way to close that gap.
Giles was able to grind out a solid win over Galax in their previous meeting on April 1st, winning 8-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
