Basketball Recap: Crown Point Comes Up Short

If Crown Point was feeling good fresh off their 69-37 takedown of Faith Christian on Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Crown Point Bulldogs came up short against the Mt. Vernon Marauders on Saturday, falling 58-37. The Bulldogs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Marauders apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2022.

Despite the defeat, Crown Point saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Ivy Henderson dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten boards. Those ten rebounds set a new season-high mark for Henderson. The team also got some help courtesy of Aaliyah Menchaca, who posted ten points.

Mt. Vernon was led to victory by Zoey Wood and Gabby Thomas. Wood went 8 of 13 on her way to 20 points along with seven assists and six boards, while Thomas went 6 of 10 on her way to 16 points and six steals. With that strong performance, Thomas is now averaging an impressive 2.2 steals per game. Alaya Baxter was another key player, going 5 of 12 on her way to 11 points.

Crown Point has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-8 record this season. As for Mt. Vernon, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-4.

Crown Point and Mt. Vernon should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Indiana Rankings. Crown Point (ranked 101st) will meet Michigan City (ranked 289th) at 7:00 p.m. on January 9th. Crown Point is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.4 points per game this season. Similarly, Mt. Vernon (ranked 39th) will meet Decatur Central (ranked 217th) at 7:30 p.m. on January 8th.
