Baseball Recap: Hammond Central's Victory on Monday Extends Winning Streak to Three

Hammond Central entered their tilt with Gary West Side on Monday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victors by a 21-1 margin over the Cougars. That's more bragging rights for the Wolves, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Julian Santiago tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Elijah Lewis was incredible, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with four runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Brandon Hilliard, who went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two doubles.

Hammond Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Hammond Central pushed their record up to 5-3-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 24.3 runs over those games. As for Gary West Side, they are on a 23-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Looking ahead, Hammond Central will venture away from home to square off against Marquette Catholic at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The Blazers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.25 runs per game on average), something the Wolves will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Gary West Side, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Hammond Morton at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Governors have averaged an impressive 8.2 runs per game this season.
