Baseball Game Preview: Laurel Spartans vs. Bladensburg Mustangs

Laurel has gone a perfect 10-0 against Bladensburg recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Spartans will challenge the Mustangs. Bladensburg took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Laurel, who comes in off a win.

Laurel will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Wednesday, then bounced right back against Wise on Friday. The Spartans were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Pumas. The victory continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Pumas: they've now won five in a row.

Aiden Lee made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Those 13 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, earning two runs and two stolen bases. Those runs were his first of the season.

In other batting news, CJ DeTurris was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases and two runs. He has become a key player for Laurel: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 2-7 otherwise. Demerius Custis was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.

Laurel always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .629. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Bladensburg was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their 33rd straight loss dating back to last season. They came up short against Parkdale, falling 12-2.

Laurel's win bumped their record up to 4-8. As for Bladensburg, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-8.

Laurel took their victory against Bladensburg in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 24-1 score. Will the Spartans repeat their success, or do the Mustangs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
