The Greenbrier East Spartans will take on the PikeView Panthers at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Greenbrier East is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
On Saturday, Greenbrier East came up short against Sissonville and fell 6-2. The Spartans have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Greenbrier East saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Eli Green, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Seven must be PikeView's lucky number: they beat James Monroe with that score not once but twice on Wednesday. The Panthers didn't even let the Mavericks on the board, marking the Panthers' second-straight 7-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Panthers, who have now won 12 contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Eli Hilling made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over seven innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. PikeView is undefeated when Hilling posts two or more stolen bases, but 9-10 otherwise.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Trenton Tolliver, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of PikeView's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 8-10 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Naylor, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.
PikeView was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as James Monroe only posted a batting average of .125.
PikeView's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-10. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Greenbrier East, their defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 16-11.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Greenbrier East hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .322. However, it's not like PikeView struggles in that department as they've averaged .339. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Greenbrier East came out on top in a nail-biter against PikeView when the teams last played back in April, sneaking past 5-3. Will the Spartans repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
