Winthrop is 0-10 against Danvers since May of 2016 but things could change on Thursday. The Vikings will square off against the Falcons at 5:00 p.m.
Winthrop is headed into Thursday's match looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their sixth straight game on Wednesday. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 9-8 heartbreaker at the hands of Northeast Metro RVT.
Amelia Spencer made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Sofia Gonzalez, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Meanwhile, Danvers had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Monday. They were the clear victors by an 18-2 margin over the Witches. The result was nothing new for the Falcons, who have now won six contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Skylar Coakley made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out ten over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and one double. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Danvers got a massive performance out of Kyla Moroney, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with five runs and two doubles. With that strong performance, Moroney is now averaging an impressive 2.1 runs per game. Another player making a difference was Addi McCarty, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs.
Danvers was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Danvers' win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-5. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Winthrop, their loss dropped their record down to 4-16.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Winthrop has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Danvers struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Winthrop might still be hurting after the 16-0 defeat they got from Danvers in their previous matchup back in April. Can the Vikings avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
