Kenzie Jackson was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over nine innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Ashely Whittenburg was incredible, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.
Stone Memorial was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Livingston Academy only posted a batting average of .182.
Meanwhile, Monterey owes their pitching crew a big pat on the back after their performance on Friday. They came out on top against Jackson County by a score of 5-0. Winning may never get old, but the Wildcats sure are getting used to it with their fourth in a row.
The result came thanks to Alexandrea Novak's shutout, as she gave up just a hit and racked up 15 Ks.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Haylee Trevathan, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one triple, and one run.
Monterey's win was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-6-1. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games. As for Stone Memorial, their record now sits at 14-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Stone Memorial has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Monterey struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Stone Memorial came out on top in a nail-biter against Monterey when the teams last played back in March, sneaking past 2-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
