The South Cougars pushed their score all the way to 62 on Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell 74-62 to Haysville Campus. South has struggled against Haysville Campus recently, as their match on Thursday was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
South lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Gavin Devoe, who scored 13 points along with six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jace Humphrey, who scored 17 points along with five rebounds.
Haysville Campus had a senior duo take command as Andrell Burton, jr dropped a double-double on 27 points and 12 rebounds and Kaason Thomas scored 20 points along with nine rebounds and three steals. That makes it five consecutive games in which Burton, jr has scored at least a third of Haysville Campus' points. The team also got some help courtesy of Landon Brown, who scored 12 points.
South's defeat dropped their record down to 2-10. As for Haysville Campus, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-4.
South will head out on the road to square off against Maize South at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The timing is sure in Maize South's favor as the squad sits on four straight wins at home while South has been banged up by 14 consecutive losses on the road dating back to last season. As for Haysville Campus, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Eisenhower at 7:30 a.m. on January 26th. Eisenhower has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
