Sandia is on a ten-game streak of home wins, while Farmington is on a seven-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Sandia Matadors will take on the Farmington Scorpions at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Sandia stacked a 12th blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Saturday. They took their matchup on the road with ease, bagging a 65-12 win over Del Norte. Given Sandia's advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked third, while Del Norte is ranked 73rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sandia's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Audri Wright led the charge by dropping a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds. Wright continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Kaiyah Benally, who scored 14 points along with four steals.
Meanwhile, Farmington slipped by Hobbs 46-45 on Friday.
Kapiolani Anitielu continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, dropping a double-double on 23 points and 14 rebounds. She hasn't dropped below 15points for three straight games. Kjani Anitielu was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with eight rebounds and five assists.
Sandia's win bumped their record up to 14-2. As for Farmington, their win bumped their record up to 15-1.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the pair are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Sandia hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having only averaged 71.1 points per game. However, it's not like Farmington struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 59.6 points per game. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Sandia beat Farmington 63-56 in their previous meeting back in February of 2023. Will Sandia repeat their success, or does Farmington have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
