Westfield hasn't had much luck against South Lakes recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Bulldogs are taking a road trip to take on the Seahawks at 6:30 p.m. South Lakes took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Westfield, who comes in off a win.
Westfield was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last game, but they sure didn't let that happen against Chantilly on Tuesday. The Bulldogs blew past the Chargers 9-2. Considering the Bulldogs have won four contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Morgan Mills spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on one hit.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Lizzy Laurelli, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. What's more, she posted two hits, the most she's had since back in May of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Rylee Schmid, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
The home team had won the previous three meetings between South Lakes and James Madison, and James Madison kept the tradition alive. The Seahawks lost 10-0 to the Warhawks on Tuesday. The shutout was out of character for the Seahawks seeing as the last time the team failed to score was back in March.
South Lakes saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sofia Ponce, who went 1-for-2 with one double.
South Lakes' defeat ended a six-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 9-4. As for Westfield, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. Westfield hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1.1 home runs per game. However, it's not like South Lakes struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Westfield suffered a grim 10-1 defeat to South Lakes when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Bulldogs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
