The Matoaca Warriors will head out on the road to take on the Glen Allen Jaguars at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Glen Allen will face off against a team with plenty of momentum: Matoaca extended their winning streak to four on Thursday. The Warriors blew past Prince George 10-0. The Warriors' pitching crew has been rock solid lately; the team hasn't given up a run in their last four matches.
Kaylee Hodges made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in nine consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
In other batting news, Abby Davis was incredible, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double. That double was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Savannah Wright, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Matoaca hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in four consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Glen Allen faced off against Hermitage on Friday. The Jaguars came out on top against the Panthers by a score of 13-0 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since May 10, 2019, but that streak is no more.
The result came thanks to Heidi Gill's shutout, as she gave up just a hit and racked up nine Ks.
At the plate, Ila Goding and Alison Via did most of the damage at the plate: Goding got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two doubles, two RBI, and one run, while Via went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and three runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Caroline Jessie, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Glen Allen's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-1. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.3 runs over those games. As for Matoaca, their record is now 9-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Matoaca has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 12.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Glen Allen struggles in that department as they've been averaging 10.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Matoaca beat Glen Allen 8-3 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Do the Warriors have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Jaguars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
