The Smoky Mountain Mustangs pushed their score all the way to 55 on Wednesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a hard 69-55 fall against Brevard. While losing is never fun, Smoky Mountain can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 369th, while Brevard is ranked 182nd).
Despite the loss, Smoky Mountain saw an underclassman step up: Ben Brown scored 20 points along with 5 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Cameron Fowler, who scored 8 points.
Even though they lost, Smoky Mountain were working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Brevard only racked up 24.
Tre Crite went supernova for Brevard, dropping a double-double on 29 points and 16 rebounds. The contest was Crite's third in a row with at least ten points. Eli Griffin was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with 9 rebounds and 8 assists.
Smoky Mountain still hasn't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-3. That rough patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.0 points per game. As for Brevard, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
Smoky Mountain is on the road again on Friday and play against Erwin at 8:00 p.m. on December 1st. One thing working in Erwin's favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season. As for Brevard, they will be playing at home against Rosman at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Rosman focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Tuesday.
