Softball Game Preview: Steele Canyon Cougars vs. Olympian Eagles

The Steele Canyon Cougars will take on the Olympian Eagles in a tournament on Thursday. Steele Canyon is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.

Steele Canyon barely beat Clairemont the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Everything went Steele Canyon's way against Clairemont on Monday as Steele Canyon made off with a 13-4 victory. The Cougars have beaten the Chieftains the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Chieftains has come to flipping the script.

Marina Gonzalez made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched four innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Gonzalez was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.

In other batting news, Steele Canyon got a big performance out of Kayala Hopkins, who scored three runs while going 2-for-2. Those three runs gave Hopkins a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Makenzie Meyer, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI.

Steele Canyon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .556. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Clairemont only posted a batting average of .300.

Meanwhile, Olympian fell victim to Rancho Bernardo and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They came up short against the Broncos, falling 7-0. The Eagles have struggled against the Broncos recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost meetings.

Olympian saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kailynn Robeson, who went 2-for-3 with one double.

The win got Steele Canyon back to even at 4-4. As for Olympian, their loss dropped their record down to 2-4.

Steele Canyon was able to grind out a solid victory over Olympian when the teams last played back in April of 2023, winning 7-3. Will Steele Canyon repeat their success, or does Olympian have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
