2A Region 1 recap October 1, 2013
Fans got a thrill when Koie Jackson and Joey Champion connected against Alcorn Central. The connection was good for 96 yards, the longest such play in 2A Region 1 this season.
Walnut extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Benton County [Hickory Flat/Ashland], 34-14. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
Baldwyn's dynamic duo of Corbin Scott and Martel Brown proved tough for Tishomingo County to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Scott threw for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns and Brown had 116 yards receiving. Duke Upshaw helped Baldwyn's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 30 yards.
Rashod Owens was a key player and the best on defense this week as the Bearcats bested the Braves. The 5-foot-8 defensive lineman grabbed 2.5 sacks.
J.T. Herring was a passing and rushing force as New Site lost to the Bears.
He went 9-12 with 0 interception.
Mantachie's Dustin Carrell and Nick Burns led the league in both passing and receiving yards. Carrell has thrown for 826 yards this season, while Burns has 17 catches for 338 yards. Herring from the Royals leads the league in rushing with 590 yards.
One of 2A Region 1's premier quarterbacks will face off with its top pass rusher when the Mustangs and Baldwyn face off next week.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when New Site takes on East Union. As it stands, the Royals are in fifth, while the Urchins are in first.
The league will see a high scoring game when Michael Gray's team and Mantachie face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Bearcats comes in having scored 185 this season, while Lynn Moore's team has scored 224. Baldwyn scored 53 points last week as it topped Tishomingo County.
The Bearcats took down Lanny Jones' team 53-18 last week, the largest margin of any game. Scott in the win.
