The Sparta Academy Warriors waltzed into their matchup Friday with two straight wins but they left with three. They came out on top against Monroe Academy by a score of 41-31. Given Sparta Academy's advantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 93rd, while Monroe Academy is ranked 290th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Sparta Academy to victory were Mary Trainham Brock and Kaitlyn Johnson. Brock scored ten points along with five assists and five rebounds, while Johnson scored 13 points along with nine rebounds and four steals. Johnson is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Jamie Ellissa Deason, who scored eight points along with nine rebounds.
Sparta Academy's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-2. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.7 points per game. As for Monroe Academy, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-4.
Sparta Academy is on the road again on Tuesday and play against Lowndes Academy at 6:00 p.m. on January 2, 2024. Lowndes Academy comes in still looking for their first win of the season. As for Monroe Academy, they will be playing at home against Morgan Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
