Basketball Recap: Chatham Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Mason Adkins and Amare Word

Chatham lost against Gretna back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Chatham Cavaliers lost 69-43 to the Gretna Hawks. While losing is never fun, the Cavaliers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 260th, while the Hawks are ranked 62nd).

Chatham's loss came despite strong showings from Amare Word and Mason Adkins. Word posted 16 points in addition to five boards and three steals, while Adkins scored nine points and five rebounds. The match was Word's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Jaylen Brown, who put up six points.

Chatham has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-7 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.0 points per game. As for Gretna, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-1.

Chatham wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 47-42 win against Magna Vista on the 23rd. As for Gretna, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 64-40 victory against William Campbell on the 24th.
