5A Region 4 recap Oct. 23, 2012
Picayune extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region 4 this week by beating East Central, 48-7. The victory was the eighth in a row for the Maroon Tide.
Pearl River Central took down Moss Point 52-6 last week, the largest margin of any game. Dylan Spiers threw for 86 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
Picayune's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Benjamin Hickman threw for 88 and two touchdowns and Kardarius Cross had 58 yards receiving. On the ground Doug Cross chipped in 147 yards. Xavier Haralson helped Picayune's passing attack out by catching one ball for 35 yards.
Chase Jones made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Tigers fell to the Blue Devils. The 6-foot-0 defensive end recorded one fumble.
Moss Point's Anthony Mitchell and Antwan Mitchell have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Mitchell has thrown for 1148 yards this season, while Mitchell, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 20 catches for 381 yards. Cross from the Maroon Tide leads the league in rushing with 768 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Pearl River Central takes on Gautier. As it stands, Eric Collins' team is in second, while the Gators are in fifth.
The Blue Devils led 5A Region 4 in scoring this week after putting up 52 points on Kevin Jackson's team. Spiers in the win.
