The Hopkins Vikings will venture away from home to challenge the Vicksburg Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopkins is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.2 runs per game this season.
Hopkins fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Holland Christian on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 15-12 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Maroons. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Ava Vanderkolk was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-5 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Another player making a difference was Kelsey Burgess, who went 3-for-5 with one home run and one double.
Meanwhile, Vicksburg unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Wednesday. They fell just short of Three Rivers by a score of 7-6.
Allison Truckey was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she pitched 6.1 innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Lena Lancaster made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Grace Zimmerman was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two doubles.
Hopkins' record now sits at 4-4. As for Vicksburg, their record is now 4-2.
Friday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Hopkins hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .435. However, it's not like Vicksburg struggles in that department as they've averaged .428. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Hopkins suffered a grim 15-0 defeat to Vicksburg when the teams last played back in April of 2023. Can the Vikings avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
