Baseball Game Preview: Gooding Senators vs. Declo Hornets

The Gooding Senators are taking a road trip to face off against the Declo Hornets at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Declo took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on Gooding, who comes in off a win.

Gooding was handed a 15-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 victory over Wendell. Surprisingly, this marked the Senators' fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Cougar Stockham looked comfortable as he tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He is becoming a predictor of Gooding's success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 2-1 (and 5-7 when he doesn't).

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Riley Arnold, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those two runs gave him a new career-high. Zaeden Gonzales also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Gooding kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wendell only managed one hit.

Meanwhile, Declo was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They came up short against Firth, falling 17-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Hornets have suffered against the Cougars since April 17, 2019.

Declo's defeat dropped their record down to 1-11. As for Gooding, their win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-8.

Gooding came out on top in a nail-biter against Declo in their previous meeting back in March, sneaking past 8-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Senators since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
