The Bunnell Bulldogs will venture away from home to challenge the Stratford Red Devils at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Bunnell is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
Bunnell came into their game on Monday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They lost 14-1 to Brookfield. The defeat continues a trend for the Bulldogs in their meetings with the Bobcats: they've now lost four in a row.
Bunnell saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Parker Smith, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That double was Smith's first of the season.
Stratford came out on top against Weston on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive ten-run first inning. The Red Devils put the hurt on the Trojans with a sharp 16-2 victory. Considering the Red Devils have won four contests by more than eight runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Stratford also got a great performance from Morgan Letizia as she pitched five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Letizia has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Riley Dicks was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Carolyne Burlone was another key player, going 4-for-5 with four RBI and one run.
Stratford was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .556. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in four consecutive matches.
Bunnell's loss dropped their record down to 5-5. As for Stratford, their record is now 4-5.
Wednesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Bunnell hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .320. However, it's not like Stratford struggles in that department as they've averaged .363. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Bunnell was able to grind out a solid win over Stratford when the teams last played two weeks ago, winning 6-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bulldogs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
