North Hollywood's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was LOGAN GRANT, who rushed for 40 yards and one touchdown, and also threw for 132 yards and one TD while completing 83.3% of his passes. The Huskies also got a significant boost from GAVEN ZAMORA, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 103 yards.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: North Hollywood was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 375 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
Another reason for the win was North Hollywood's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. In fact, those sacks all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut PAUL PENNSON.
Verdugo Hills hadn't beaten Chavez on the road since September 14, 2018 but that history sure didn't bother them last Thursday. The Dons secured a 12-8 W over the Eagles.
Verdugo Hills' win came from a few key players North Hollywood will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Jered Smith, who rushed for 54 yards and a pair of scores on only six carries, and also threw for 153 yards on 13 of 28 attempts. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in rushing touchdowns (two). Another player making a difference was Aiden Mejia, who gained 131 total yards.
Verdugo Hills' first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for North Hollywood, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-3.
Everything came up roses for North Hollywood against Verdugo Hills when the teams last played back in November of 2024, as the team secured a 42-14 victory. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Mejia, who rushed for 110 yards and one touchdown on only nine carries. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will the Huskies still be able to contain Mejia? There's only one way to find out.
