The Marion Giants pushed their score all the way to 62 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. Their rough 82-62 defeat to Richmond might stick with them for a while. Marion was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Richmond apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2022.
When it comes to explaining why Marion lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jaymen Townsend. Despite the final result, he scored 24 points along with 8 rebounds. Townsend scored a full 38.7% of Marion's points, the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Amar Rogers, who scored 12 points along with 5 rebounds.
Richmond was led to victory by Mason Carpenter and Cedric Horton. Carpenter scored 23 points, while Horton scored 29 points. That makes it three consecutive games in which Horton has scored at least 25% of Richmond's points. Ryder Cate was another key contributor, scoring 10 points.
This is the second loss in a row for Marion and nudges their season record down to 2-2. As for Richmond, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 3-0.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Marion will face off against Wabash at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Wabash has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. Richmond won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Talawanda at 7:30 p.m. on December 9th. Talawanda is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
