The two teams that squared off for the state title in the UIL's largest classification last year both met playoff elimination in the area round last week.
North Shore (Houston) and Judson (Converse) are out, but the first 10 teams in MaxPreps Texas Top 25 survived the first week of playoffs.
Winners of midweek regional quarterfinals advance to four-team regional tournaments this weekend. The tournament winner will earn a berth in the state Final Four on March 12-14 in San Antonio's Alamodome.
Icy travel conditions in North Texas played havoc with opening week of the postseason schedule. A few teams, including DeSoto and Cedar Hill, have not yet played area playoffs and are faced with the possibility of winning four games this week to advance to state.

1. Plano West 28-2 (1)Soso Jamabo scored 22 points and
Mickey Mitchell added 13 in a 69-60 Class 6A area playoff victory over Coppell. The Wolves opened postseason with a 64-43 win over Timber Creek (Keller).
2. Atascocita (Humble) 33-1 (2)Carsen Edwards scored 17 points and
Brandon Loville added 11 in a 53-43 Class 6A area playoff victory over Anderson (Austin). Earlier in the week the Eagles routed Spring 79-59.
3. Lancaster 29-4 (3)The Tigers rolled through the first two rounds of the Class 5A playoffs.
Elijah Thomas poured in 27 points in a 69-49 elimination of Lindale in the area round. Spruce (Dallas) was the Tigers' first victim in bi-district, 93-57.

Chase Winchester tallied 14 points and
Marques Bolden had 13 in a 57-53 Class 6A bi-district victory over Heritage (Colleyville). Up next is Keller in the area round.
5. Cedar Hill 27-3 (5)The Longhorns defeated Trinity (Euless) 65-53 in a Class 6A bi-district playoff by outscoring the Trojans 25-13 in the fourth quarter. Next is Guyer (Denton) in an area playoff.
6. Clear Lake (Houston) 31-2 (6)The Falcons came from behind in the fourth quarter to eliminate Memorial (Port Arthur) 52-45 in a Class 6A area playoff. Bradley George scored 26 points. In the bi-district round, Clear Lake topped Alief Elsik (Houston) 61-51.
7. Clear Creek (League City) 31-3 (7)The Wildcats passed a stress test by ousting defending state champion North Shore (Houston) 68-65 in a Class 6A area playoff. Wes Bryan's team opened the playoffs with a 60-42 romp over Fort Bend Hightower (Missouri City).
8. Brennan (San Antonio) 31-2 (8)The Bears have passed two playoff tests, the latest a 78-68 Class 6A area win over Madison (San Antonio).
Jordan Murphy led with 23 points and
Da'Shawn Key had 18. The bi-district victim was King (Corpus Christi) 76-54.
9. Richardson 30-4 (9)Brandon Averette scored 35 points and
Ben Nakwaasah had 18 in an 81-68 Class 6A area playoff victory over Harker Heights. The Eagles began postseason play by edging Nimitz (Irving) 75-69.
10. Clemens (Schertz) 30-4 (10)Mitchell McMullen scored 26 points and
Jalon Gates had 19 in a 101-61 ousting of Carroll (Corpus Christi) in the Class 6A area round. The Buffaloes began postseason with a 96-56 rout of MacArthur (San Antonio).
11. Beaumont Central 29-3 (12)The Jaguars got 11 points from
Nijal Pearson and
E'torrion Wilridge in a 57-53 Class 5A area playoff win over Fort Bend Bush (Richmond). Central opened postseason play with a 78-45 rout of New Caney.
12. Ozen (Beaumont) 29-3 (13)Josh Boyd,
Jordan Hunter and
Christian Bolton each scored 13 points in a 51-50 Class 5A area victory over Fort Bend Elkins (Missouri City). The Panthers opened the playoffs with a 71-42 thumping of Dayton.
13. Bel Air (El Paso) 32-0 (14)The Highlanders dispatched Burges (El Paso) 45-36 and Randall (Amarillo) 49-31 in the first two rounds of the Class 5A playoffs to set up a regional quarterfinal against Andress (El Paso) on Tuesday.
14. Andress (El Paso) 30-1 (15)The Eagles polished off Hanks (El Paso) 56-46 and Hereford 78-49 to make their way into the third-round Class 5A showdown with Bel Air (El Paso).
15. Amarillo 27-3 (17)Michael Dawn scored 28 points to lead the Sandies to a 75-60 victory over Midland in a Class 6A area playoff. Amarillo in bi-district humbled El Dorado (El Paso) 61-24.
16. Fort Bend Elkins (Missouri City)* 27-5 (18)The Knights' season ended with a 51-50 loss to Ozen (Beaumont) in the 5A area playoff round.
17. Kimball (Dallas) 26-7 (19)De'Rias Johnson scored 25 points and
Jawun Evans had 22 in a 78-66 defeat of Corsicana in a Class 5A area playoff. The Knights opened postseason with a 63-60 triumph over Lake Ridge (Mansfield).
18. South Oak Cliff (Dallas) 30-5 (20)C.J. Massingburg poured in 37 points in a 95-78 Class 5A area playoff victory over Lufkin. The Golden Bears in bi-district ousted Mansfield Timberview (Arlington) 92-54.
19. North Shore (Houston)* 27-7 (22)The defending champion of the state's largest classification lost 68-65 to Clear Creek (League City) in a Class 6A area playoff.
20. Liberty (Frisco) 29-3 (24)Reggie Chaney scored 22 points and
David Washington had 11 in a 57-45 Class 5A area playoff victory over Creekview (Carrollton). The Redhawks opened with a 59-35 bi-district win over McKinney North.
21. Houston Math Science & Tech 30-4 (NR)Jaqualin Greene-Duplichain scored 17 points in a 75-66 Class 6A area playoff victory over Cypress Woods (Cypress). In bi-district the Tigers ousted Taylor (Katy) 71-48.
22. Fort Bend Travis (Richmond) 27-6 (NR)The Tigers punched a ticket to the third playoff round with a 69-45 triumph over Manvel. In the Class 6A bi-district round, Friendswood was an 80-37 victim.
23. Skyline (Dallas) 25-6 (NR)Marcus Garrett and
Terrence Randolph each scored 11 points in a 46-41 area playoff elimination of Ellison (Killeen). In the Class 6A opening playoff round, the Raiders edged Mesquite 61-55.
24. Dawson (Pearland) 30-5 (NR)The Eagles recorded a pair of Class 6A playoff wins by three points — 61-58 over La Porte in bi-district followed by 52-49 over Fort Bend Clements (Sugar Land).
25. Prestonwood Christian (Plano) 30-4 (25)An 83-34 victory over Kelly Catholic (Beaumont) and 85-51 over Central Catholic (San Antonio) have moved the Lions to the third round of the TAPPS playoffs.
