Garden City is a perfect 10-0 against Thurston since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Cougars will challenge the Eagles at 4:00 p.m. Garden City's pitching crew has only allowed two runs per game this season, so Thurston's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Saturday just wasn't the day for Garden City's offense. They fell 5-0 to Edsel Ford on Saturday. The matchup marked the first time this season in which the Cougars were not able to get on the board.
Garden City saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ethan Armstrong, who went 1-for-5 with one triple.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Thurston, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They walked away with an 11-8 win over Crestwood on Wednesday. The game snapped a strange streak: the last seven times these teams have met, it?s been the away team that?s taken home the W.
Damar Crimes and Xavier Gay were major factors while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Crimes pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Gay struck out ten batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in six consecutive appearances. At bat, Crimes got on base in all four of his plate appearances with five stolen bases, two runs, and two doubles, while Gay got on base in all four of his plate appearances with five stolen bases, one run, and one double. Crimes has become a key player for Thurston: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-8 otherwise.
In other batting news, Cortez Crumble and Josiah Robinson did most of the damage at the plate: Crumble got on base in two of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs, while Robinson got on base in two of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases and two runs. Crumble is becoming a predictor of Thurston's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 2-8 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Desmond Ferguson, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run.
Thurston's record now sits at 5-8. As for Garden City, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 14-5.
Everything went Garden City's way against Thurston when the teams last played back in May of 2024, as Garden City made off with an 8-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
