Pacific Grove and Carmel are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Breakers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Padres at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Pacific Grove comes in on three and Carmel on five.
On Tuesday, Pacific Grove got the win against Alisal by a conclusive 9-3. The result was nothing new for the Breakers, who have now won eight contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Alex Giammanco spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on eight hits and racked up 13 Ks.
On the hitting side, Pacific Grove let Savannah Hardy and Isis Turner run wild. Hardy went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one double, while Turner went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles. That's the most runs Hardy has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Ella Lee, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Pacific Grove kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in four consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Carmel was able to grind out a solid win over Rancho San Juan on Tuesday, taking the game 8-5.
Ava Mangiapane made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching seven innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, earning two RBI, one run, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Nicole Tapson, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and one stolen base. She has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times she's played. Delilah Herro was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Pacific Grove's victory bumped their record up to 12-6. As for Carmel, their win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-4.
Carmel's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Pacific Grove has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.1 hits per game. It's a different story for Carmel, though, as they've been averaging 9.3 hits. Given Pacific Grove's sizable advantage in that area, the Padres will need to find a way to close that gap.
Pacific Grove skirted past Carmel 8-7 in their previous matchup back in March. Will the Breakers repeat their success, or do the Padres have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
