The Provine Rams's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their eighth straight loss. They took a 49-36 hit to the loss column at the hands of Canton. While losing is never fun, Provine can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 241st, while Canton is ranked 17th).
Canton's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Shamira Morton, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 18 rebounds. The matchup was Morton's 11th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Na'Miya Davis, who scored 19 points.
Provine bumped their record down to 1-9 with that loss, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 28.3 points per game. As for Canton, the victory (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 10-1.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Provine will finish 2023 at home by hosting Jefferson County at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Jefferson County is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'. Canton won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Northwest Rankin at 7:00 p.m. on December 22nd. Northwest Rankin is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak.
