For the first time this season, Mid Valley will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will face off against the Old Forge Blue Devils at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Mid Valley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.2 runs per game this season.
Mid Valley will roll into the match after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Thursday, then bounced right back against Montrose on Monday. Mid Valley was the clear victor by a 15-5 margin over Montrose. Considering the Spartans have won three contests by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Brett Yanoski made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Yanoski was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.
In other batting news, Mid Valley let Doug Pua and Nick Mills run wild. Pua went 1-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Mills scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. That's the most runs Mills has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Lorenzo Hernandez, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Mid Valley hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, it may have taken ten innings to finish the job, but Old Forge ultimately got the result they hoped for on Sunday. They skirted past West Scranton 6-4.
Luke Olivieri and Jake Bartnikowski made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Olivieri struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Bartnikowski didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. At bat, Olivieri scored a run while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances, while Bartnikowski scored a run while going 2-for-3.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was TJ DiMattia, who scored two runs while going 1-for-4.
Old Forge now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Mid Valley, their record is now 3-1.
Old Forge's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mid Valley hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .320. It's a different story for Old Forge, though, as they've only averaged .224. Will they be able to contain Mid Valley's hitters?
Mid Valley skirted past Old Forge 9-8 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Will Mid Valley repeat their success, or does Old Forge has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
