Baker got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Wyatt Straight out in front who rushed for 183 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 7.3 yards per carry. Those 183 rushing yards gave Straight a new career-high. Riley Renfro was in the mix as well, providing Baker with two touchdowns.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Baker was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 435 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 168 rushing yards in five consecutive contests.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Baker's defense and their seven sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Chris Palconete and Jonah Bennett, who racked up four sacks between them.
Meanwhile, Port St. Joe lost to Chipley on the road by a 29-14 margin last Friday.
Baker will have to contain Corban Butts as he made an impact in Port St. Joe's last game. He rushed for 129 yards and one TD on only 12 carries.
Baker's victory bumped their record up to 9-0. As for Port St. Joe, they now have a losing record of 3-4.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Baker has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 229.3 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Port St. Joe struggles in that department as they've been averaging 241.1 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Baker against Port St. Joe in their previous meeting back in November of 2020, as the team secured a 39-7 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Gators since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
