Basketball Recap: Utopia Sets Scoring Season-High Against Leakey

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Utopia). They simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat the Leakey Eagles 81-30. The Buffaloes have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 contests by 23 points or more this season.

Utopia's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jett Smothers led the charge by putting up 16 points along with six assists and six rebounds. What's more, Smothers also racked up six steals, the most he's had since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Taylor Wiekamp, who posted 19 points in addition to five boards and four steals.

Utopia smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 26 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 12 consecutive games.

Utopia's win was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-4. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.0 points per game. As for Leakey, they are on a 29-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-16.

Utopia has already played their next match, a 76-36 victory against Nueces Canyon on the 20th. As for Leakey, they will face off against Comstock at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Comstock will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something Leakey surely won't give up without a fight.
