St. Mark’s senior Courtney Schweizer scored six goals in a 16-10 loss to Fallston, Md., Thursday afternoon to move into first place on Delaware’s all-time girls lacrosse scoring list with 281 goals.
Schweizer, a senior captain, entered the game tied with Heide Pearce of St. Andrew’s at 275 goals before breaking the record. She will attend Johns Hopkins in the fall, which is where Pearce also played college lacrosse.
“Courtney is a competitor,” head coach Bill Eichinger said. “Every day, whether it’s in a game or at practice, she competes at a very high level.”
More Girls Lacrosse: Christiana gets first win since 2006
For the first time in three years the Christiana High School girls lacrosse team walked off the field as winners on Tuesday afternoon.
The Vikings defeated Newark, 14-12, to secure their first win of this year and first since the 2006 season when they defeated Middletown.
Seniors Jackie Mayhart (five goals) and Diptee Pathak (four) led the way for the Vikings, while junior Amber Ashley chipped in with two goals and juniors Chelsea Kelley and Allison Darling scored one goal each.
Junior goalie Laura Pineda had 12 saves.
The Vikings followed their first win in three years up with another victory Thursday afternoon against cross-town rival Glasgow, 9-8.
Pathak tallied a hat trick and Pineda had 12 saves in goal to pick up her second win of the season.
“Both wins were great confidence boosters for the girls,” co-head coach Elizabeth Moodie said. “Now we’ll try to build on that momentum and get some wins in our remaining games.”
Christiana will try to make it three in a row when it hosts Concord on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Powder Puff: Football tradition continues at Middletown
The fifth annual Middletown High School Blue-Gold Powder Puff touch football game between the senior and junior girls took place Friday night in a steady rain on the turf field at Bill Billings Stadium.
The game, which is played on a 40-yard field and billed as one-hand rough touch, is a fundraising event to benefit the Delaware Foundation for Reaching Citizens (DFRC).
Students pay $20 to play, $5 to watch, and all the proceeds go to DFRC, which is dedicated to raising funds and consciousness in support of programs that enrich the lives of Delawareans with intellectual disabilities.
While the outcome of the game really is insignificant, bragging rights this year go to the seniors, who defeated the juniors, 38-24.
The event has raised over $5,000 to date.
Milford files suit
The Milford School District has filed a lawsuit against the Henlopen Conference in Chancery Court over its switch to Division I for sports participation.
The suit is claiming that 15 Intensive Learning Center students housed at Milford High should not be counted toward the school’s total student count since they are not actually students enrolled in the school.
By counting the ILC students, Milford’s enrollment (1,171) exceeds that of the largest school in the conference, Polytech (1,164). According to conference bylaws, the schools would swap positions for the next two years with Milford moving to Division I and Polytech dropping down to Division II.
Milford’s football team, coming off a Division II state championship season in 2008, would be most affected by a move to the more competitive Division I, made up of the state’s largest schools. Many of Milford’s other sports teams already compete successfully against Division I schools.
“I just hope it gets resolved before the end of the school year,” district superintendent Dr. Robert Smith said. “They are supposed to put a bylaw change to vote 30 days after it is presented. This one was passed the same night it was proposed.”
Baseball: Sussex Central’s Wilkins tosses no-hitter
Junior Trevor Wilkins pitched a complete game no-hitter in leading Sussex Central to a 3-0 victory over archrival Indian River.
Wilkins struck out nine, while allowing only two walks and getting a solid defensive performance behind him on his way to the milestone.
“Our defense played well,” Wilkins told the Sussex Countian. “All I had to do was let [Indian River] put the ball in play.”
Senior D.J. Long provided Wilkins with all the runs he would need when he homered on a 1-2 pitch to put the Knights up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Long would later score the Knights’ third and final run on Peter Ott’s double.
Indian River also got a solid pitching performance by senior Cam Travalini.
Boys Lacrosse: Caesar Rodney boys dump cross-town rival
The Caesar Rodney boys lacrosse team remained undefeated in the Henlopen Conference with a 12-3 victory over rival Dover on Tuesday.
Junior attackman Erik Hoffstadt scored a game-high four goals as the Riders out-shot the Senators, 40-16.
Matt Matsko, Kyle Scott, and Keith Smeltzer all scored two goals each for Caesar Rodney (8-3).
Goalie Andrew Minear finished with 21 saves for Dover (6-6).
“The Dover-CR rivalry is huge in any sport at any level,” Caesar Rodney coach Drew Hughes said. “Dover is an athletic, well coached team and we were very happy to come away with the victory. I thought our kids played very aggressive and were tenacious on ground balls.
“That is an emotional game that will hopefully give us a boost through the end of the regular season and heading into the playoffs.”
Caesar Rodney will take on Milford (2-9) on May 4 before heading into its biggest game of the year when the Riders travel to Lewes to face Cape Henlopen (8-4) on May 6.
