West Prairie hasn't had much luck against Brimfield recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Cyclones will head out to take on the Indians at 10:00 a.m. West Prairie has given up an average of 11.6 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
West Prairie fell victim to Cuba/Spoon River Valley and their airtight pitching crew on Wednesday. They lost 12-0 to the Wildcats.
Meanwhile, Brimfield came tearing into Thursday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 10.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They were the clear victors by a 12-5 margin over the Cougars. The result was nothing new for the Indians, who have now won 11 games by six runs or more so far this season.
Kaeden Schatsiek made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one hit in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-5 with one home run and four RBI.
In other batting news, Layne Johnson and Dane Fagerburg did most of the damage at the plate: Johnson went 4-for-5 with two triples, one run, and one RBI, while Fagerburg went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Those four hits gave Johnson a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brody Kenney, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Brimfield pushed their record up to 16-4-1 with the victory, which was their seventh straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.1 runs over those games. As for West Prairie, their loss dropped their record down to 2-9.
West Prairie suffered a grim 19-1 defeat to Brimfield when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Cyclones avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
