The Vela Sabercats came tearing into Friday's matchup with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 22 points) and they left with even more momentum. They had just enough and edged Harlingen South out 28-26. Given Vela's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 264th, while Harlingen South is ranked 630th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Janai Coleman was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds. The match was her sixth in a row with at least ten points.
Despite the loss, Harlingen South still got an impressive performance from Serena Cano, who scored 12 points.
Vela is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-3 record this season. As for Harlingen South, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-7.
Vela's road trip will continue as they head out to face Pioneer at 1:30 p.m. on December 2nd. As for Harlingen South, they will take on Edinburg North at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Edinburg North focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 16 on Thursday.
