The Brownfield Cubs will take on the Stanton Buffaloes at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The timing is sure in Brownfield's favor as the team sits on five straight wins at home (dating back to last season) while Stanton has been banged up by six consecutive losses on the road.
Last Tuesday, Brownfield got the win against Crane by a conclusive 13-7. The result was nothing new for the Cubs, who have now won eight matches by six runs or more so far this season.
Meanwhile, Stanton can bid farewell to their 11-game losing streak thanks to their game on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out Lamesa 4-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Buffaloes have posted since February 22nd.
Gage McCown and Jaedyn Martinez made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, McCown didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over six innings pitched. Meanwhile, Martinez tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Stanton is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-12 otherwise. At the plate, McCown scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-3, while Martinez scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits Martinez has posted since back in April of 2024.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Mason Martinez, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Those two hits gave him a new career-high. Braydn Garcia also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Stanton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .515. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lamesa only posted an OBP of .258.
Brownfield has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games. As for Stanton, their win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-6 and their overall record up to 4-13.
Everything went Brownfield's way against Stanton when the teams last played back in March, as Brownfield made off with a 17-0 victory. Do the Cubs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Buffaloes turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
