Whitwell hasn't had much luck against Gordonsville recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. Whitwell will host Gordonsville at 5:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Gordonsville will be up against a hot Whitwell team: the squad just extended their winning streak to four. The Tigers never let Sale Creek get on the board and left with a 6-0 win on Saturday. The Tigers' pitching crew has been rock solid lately; the team hasn't given up a run in their last three matches.
Whitwell's victory was truly a team effort as seven different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Michael Kilgore, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Meanwhile, with a playoff win on the line, Gordonsville rose to the challenge on Saturday. They put the hurt on the Red Devils with a sharp 10-0 win. The victory continues a trend for the Tigers in their matchups with the Red Devils: they've now won three in a row.
Colton Bennett and J. Foster made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Bennett struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Foster kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Bennett has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances. At the plate, Bennett went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI, while Foster got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
In other batting news, Gordonsville let Waylon Kennedy and Sam Ausderau run wild. Kennedy earned four runs and five stolen bases, while Ausderau got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases, one run, and one double. Those five stolen bases gave Kennedy a new career-high. Dalton Hancock was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Gordonsville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .588. They are a perfect 14-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Gordonsville pushed their record up to 19-10 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.3 runs on average over those games. As for Whitwell, their win bumped their record up to 21-10-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Whitwell has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Gordonsville struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Whitwell might still be hurting after the 11-0 defeat they got from Gordonsville in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Will Whitwell have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
