Dunlap and Pekin are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Eagles will host the Dragons at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Dunlap sitting on four straight victories and Pekin on five.
Nine must be Dunlap's lucky number: they beat Normal Community with that score not once but twice on Saturday. The Eagles walked away with a 9-4 win over the Ironmen.
The team relied heavily on Mara Hindenburg, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Rachel Mies, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one triple.
Dunlap was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .478. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Normal Community only posted a batting average of .286.
While Pekin didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They were the clear victors by a 12-1 margin over Centennial on Saturday. The result was nothing new for the Dragons, who have now won three matchups by 11 runs or more so far this season.
Pekin let Kylea Siedell and Lily Towery run wild. Siedell went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and one double, while Towery scored three runs while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. Patience Toungett was another key player, going a perfect 1-for-1 with three RBI and one double.
Dunlap's victory bumped their record up to 8-3. As for Pekin, their win bumped their record up to 6-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Dunlap has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Pekin struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Dunlap came out on top in a nail-biter against Pekin when the teams last played back in May of 2024, sneaking past 3-1. Will the Eagles repeat their success, or do the Dragons have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
