With a playoff game on the line, Southington rose to the challenge on Tuesday. They took their matchup on the road with ease, bagging a 47-20 victory over the Red Hawks. The result was nothing new for Southington, who have now won seven matchups by 21 points or more so far this season.
Meanwhile, Staples faced Fairfield Prep in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Staples slipped by Fairfield Prep 13-12 on Tuesday. Winning may never get old, but Staples sure are getting used to it with their tenth in a row.
Smith was his usual excellent self, rushing for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Smith has been hot recently, having posted two or more rushing touchdowns the last four times he's played.
Cheshire's victory bumped their season record to 0-0 while Southington's defeat dropped theirs to 6-4.
Southington came up short against Staples in their previous meeting back in September, falling 34-27. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Staples' Smith, who rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns while completing 76.5% of his passes.
