Two dominant players in Olliver Davis and Brycen Schwenka are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Cozad Haymakers will be playing at home against the Minden Whippets at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Even though Cozad has not done well against Lexington recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. Cozad walked away with a 60-47 win over Lexington. Given Cozad's advantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 19th, while Lexington is ranked 201st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cozad's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Davis, who scored 24 points along with four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Davis has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Monty Brooks-follmer, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Minden posted their closest victory yet this season on Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Holdrege and snuck past 56-54. That's two games straight that Minden has won by exactly two points.
It was another big night for Kade Dorszynski, who scored 25 points along with two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Austin Lutkemeier, who scored nine points.
Cozad's win bumped their record up to 12-3. As for Minden, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 7-5 record this season.
Tuesday's matchup is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Cozad have been dynamite from deep this season, having drained 43.1% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Minden struggles in that department as they've drained 37.9% of their threes per game this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Cozad didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Minden in their previous matchup back in February of 2023, but they still walked away with a 54-49 win. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Minden's Carter Harsin, who scored 18 points along with seven rebounds. Now that he won't be playing on Tuesday, will it be that much easier for Cozad to walk away with another win? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
