There's no place like home for the Excel Christian Warriors, who bounced back after a tough loss on the road last Tuesday. They breezed by Whittell at home to the tune of 54-14. That 40 points margin sets a new team best for Excel Christian this season.
Leading Excel Christian to victory were Jonah Calderas and Mark Doerfler. Calderas scored 19 points along with five rebounds and four steals, while Doerfler scored 14 points along with five rebounds and three blocks. That's the first time this season that Calderas scored 15 or more points. Cole Gassen was another key contributor, scoring six points along with nine rebounds.
Despite the loss, Whittell had strong showings from Zander Lezama-Demazo, who scored seven points along with 11 rebounds and six blocks, and Alex Rvovic, who scored five points along with eight rebounds and three steals. That was a full 35.7% of Whittell's points, marking the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Excel Christian now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Whittell, their loss was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 1-9.
Excel Christian won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Mineral County at 2:00 p.m. on January 13th. One thing working in Mineral County's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last three matchups.
